One of Japan's Hundred Scenic Views, where the sun sets behind Yomegashima Island — the iconic symbol of Matsue, the "City of Water."
Lake Shinji is a brackish lake stretching along the western side of Matsue City, the seventh largest lake in Japan with a circumference of 47 km and a surface area of 79.1 km². Listed among Japan's Hundred Scenic Views, it is also well known for its thriving shijimi clam fishery.
The small island of Yomegashima (circumference 240 m) floating on the lake is said to have a sorrowful legend: a young bride, tormented by her mother-in-law, perished while crossing the frozen lake, and the compassionate god of the lake is said to have raised the island overnight in mourning for her soul. At dusk, the silhouette of Yomegashima reflected on the water's surface against a crimson sky is regarded as the most breathtaking view on Lake Shinji.
The stretch of lakeside along National Route 9 from Shiragata Park is the classic spot for sunset viewing. A well-appointed terrace in front of the Shimane Art Museum is also popular, and both are easily reached from JR Matsue Station by bus.
