Kurayoshi White-Wall Storehouses

A preserved Edo–Meiji townscape of white-plastered walls and red roof tiles along a riverside canal.

About this place

The Kurayoshi White-Wall Storehouses are a historic streetscape preserved in the Utsubuki-Tamagawa district of Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings by the national government. White-plastered walls and reddish-brown Sekishū roof tiles (red tiles from Shimane Prefecture) line the Tamagawa River, creating a distinctive landscape where buildings from the Edo, Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa eras blend together to charm every visitor.

The district originally developed as a castle town for Utsubuki Castle in the Muromachi period and prospered as a jin'ya (administrative) town during the Edo period. Walking along the stone-bridged banks of the Tamagawa River, you are treated to a continuous townscape of storehouses and merchant houses in the striking contrast of white walls and red tiles—a scene selected for both the '100 Fragrant Landscapes of Japan' and the '100 Beautiful Historic Environments of Japan'.

Today, renovated storehouses and machiya townhouses house cafés and craft shops, allowing visitors to enjoy street food and hands-on experiences while strolling. The district is easily accessible—about 10 minutes by bus or car from Kurayoshi Station.
