Gassan-Toda Castle Ruins

A mountain castle stronghold of the Amago clan for 170 years, listed among Japan's Top 100 Castles — best visited alongside the Adachi Museum of Art.

About this place

The Gassan-Toda Castle Ruins are a nationally designated historic site located in Hirose-cho, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. Built to take full advantage of the rugged terrain of Mt. Gassan (197 m above sea level), the castle is also selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles.

The castle is renowned as the impregnable stronghold where the Amago clan, rulers of Izumo during the Sengoku period, maintained their seat of power for approximately 170 years. It long withstood the fierce assaults of the Mori clan before finally falling in 1566, after which it continued to serve as a base for successive lords until the Horio clan relocated to Matsue Castle in 1611, ending the castle town's role. The site is also registered as a component cultural property of Japan Heritage.

The ruins can be reached by car in about 15 minutes from the Yasugi Interchange. From the main keep ruins at the summit, visitors enjoy panoramic views over the Yasugi plains and Lake Nakaumi — a rewarding destination not only for castle enthusiasts but for anyone who enjoys exploring history on foot.
