Yasugibushi Engeikan (folk-dance theater)

A dedicated venue where live performances of the Yasugibushi folk song and its beloved loach-scooping dance can be enjoyed every day.

About this place

Yasugibushi Engeikan is a facility in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, dedicated to local performing arts. It features a rakugo-style hall with gallery seating — a rarity even in the San'in region — where visitors can watch live performances of 'Yasugibushi,' the folk song famous throughout Japan, along with its iconic loach-scooping dance.

Yasugibushi is a folk song handed down in the Izumo region, long cherished together with its comical loach-scooping dance. The theater holds regular performances featuring live vocals, shamisen, and dancing, and concludes each show with a corner where audience members can try the men's loach-scooping dance themselves.

Located just next to the Adachi Museum of Art, the theater is a convenient stop to combine with a museum visit. The building also houses a souvenir shop where local Yasugi specialties can be browsed and purchased.
