Izumo View

Hinomisaki Lighthouse

Japan's tallest stone-built lighthouse, standing on a sheer cliff above the Sea of Japan with sweeping coastal views.

About this place

Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a white stone tower rising from the cliffs at Cape Hinomisaki in Taisha-cho, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. At 43.65 meters, it is the tallest stone-built lighthouse in Japan, and first lit in 1903 (Meiji 36). It is also designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.

Perched at the tip of a promontory jutting into the Sea of Japan, the lighthouse offers a panoramic view of the rugged Izumo coastline from its observation deck. On clear days, the distant silhouette of the Oki Islands can be seen on the horizon. The interior is open to visitors, and 163 spiral steps lead up to the spectacular view at the top.

The lighthouse is within walking distance of Hinomisaki Shrine, and from here visitors can also spot Fumishima Island, a known breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. During the tourist season, the small port town at the base of the lighthouse comes alive with sightseers exploring the area.
